Shelter boxes Each box will normally contain a 10-person tent, plus a selection of other equipment to help an extended family survive for a minimum of six months. The exact contents will depend on local conditions and what is most needed but will generally include blankets, a multi-fuel or a wood-burning stove, cooking equipment, water containers and purification tablets, a basic tool kit and a children’s pack. As of July 2008, ShelterBox has provided shelter for over 600,000-plus people in 46 countries responding to 72 disasters, raising over £20 million in just seven years. Approximately 45,000 boxes have been sent as aid, including boxes paid for with funds from many countries. http://www.shelterbox.org |

Clearing the Kosovo minefields Large quantities of cluster bombs that were dropped in 1999 still lie undetected in the countryside around the City of Peja in the West of Kosovo. The minefields, one just 200m from the outskirts of the city, deny safe passage along the valley and thwart attempts by the town council and local hoteliers to attract tourism back to the region. Several hundred people have been killed by unexploded ordinance over the past decade. |
