This was the topic of much debate in the period prior to inauguration. It was reported that during the initial debates at the Sevenoaks Club concern had been raised that the lunchtime “mother” club might be confused with its evening offspring, either geographically or in relation to new members. This resulted in opposition to the use of “Sevenoaks” in the name. So, for example, “Sevenoaks Evening Rotary Club” was not acceptable.
Formation members were asked for suggestions resulting in some very witty, amusing, and for the most part unusable results. Sadly that original list has been lost in the mists of time. The final contenders to be put to the vote were “Codsheath” (after the ancient hundred of Codsheath), and “Amherst” after Lord Amherst, a notable former resident of Montreal at Sevenoaks.
Naming the club after a person rather than a place caused some concern. Henry Robinson had to consult with higher authority but was assured that RI had no objection. Time was pressing because the name had to be agreed prior to the Inaugural Meeting. After a lengthy discussion on 15th March 1978 and by a narrow margin, “Amherst” won.
Attention then turned to producing a Banner design. Brian Taylor set about working up some ideas. Consideration was given to the possibility of including the Amherst coat of arms and a letter was sent to Lord Amherst at The Travellers Club. He replied as follows;

Eventually Brian came up with a design incorporating the acorn for Sevenoaks and the maple leaf for Canada where Lord Amherst achieved his great victory as supreme commander of the British forces that captured Quebec in September 1759.
In 2005, the rules for naming clubs having changed in the intervening period, the club name was changed to Sevenoaks Amherst.
